The effectiveness of droid starfighters has been debated in strategic circles for generations. While droid starfighters are capable of maneuvers that would pulp even the sturdiest organic pilot, they lack the resourcefulness and cunning that living pilots bring into combat. During the Battle of Naboo the Trade Federation attempted to counter any shortcomings in their automated vulture droid designs by dispatching them en masse. Swarms of the tiny fighters were launched from their battleship's cavernous hangars, attacking the small number of Naboo starfighters defending the planet.

Like the ground-based battle droid infantry, droid starfighters are controlled by the Trade Federation's Droid Control Ship. When not in flight, the droid starfighter can transform into a walking mode allowing them to be used in surface patrols.

[ droid starfighter ] As the Clone Wars erupted, and the Trade Federation became one of the founding members of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, they supplied their vulture droids to the growing Separatist fleet. Painted with the blue and white hexagonal sigils of the Confederacy, vulture droids would plague Jedi and clone pilots on many battlefronts, including the decisive Battle of Coruscant.

The Xi Char cathedral factories of Charros IV manufactured a vast number of precision-engineered droid starfighters for the Trade Federation. The development of advanced technologies is a religion to the Xi Charrians of the Haor Chall order, and the droid starfighter is testament to their devotion.

When in starfighter mode, the droid carries four blaster cannons in its wings, and two energy torpedo launchers along its forward edge. When transformed into walking mode, the launchers are angled for antipersonnel use.

[ droid starfighter ] Unconventional solid fuel concentrate slugs housed in the aft fuel chamber power the droids. These fuels burn rapidly when ignited, giving the droid starfighter incredible bursts of energy, but a very limited range of operation. As such, droid starfighters must operate from a nearby launch base or capital ship. When not deployed, these starfighters hang from overhead recharging racks.

The Trade Federation jealously guards its new innovations, and the droid starfighter is equipped in that regard. Should it lose contact with the Droid Control Ship due to malfunction or other unexpected catastrophe, the starfighter's self destruct mechanism prevents the droid from falling into enemy hands.

Neimoidian Shuttle

Height:

Type:
Transport shuttle
Affiliation:
Trade Federation, Confederacy of Independent Systems
Associations:

For transit from their enormous Trade Federation battleships to the surface of their economically or militarily conquered worlds, Neimoidian officials travel in a distinctive shaped Neimoidian shuttle. Curved insect-like landing gears lower from the ship's belly, giving the craft's legs a pincer-like appearance as it settles on a landing pad.

Trade Federation officials such as Nute Gunray and Rune Haako used a Neimoidian shuttle to land on Naboo following their successful occupation of the planet, and likewise Viceroy Gunray used the same model of shuttle to escape besieged Geonosis at the start of the Clone Wars. The military leader of the Confederacy, General Grievous, used a Neimoidian shuttle for his arrival on Utapau following his failure to escape Coruscant with a captive Chancellor Palpatine.

The Sheathipede-class shuttle is strictly for short-range transit, either across planetary surface or from surface to orbital space where a larger ship or station awaits. Like much of Neimoidian technology, the vessel vaguely resembles a large insect with its pointed landing claws. Passengers sit in a central lounge; most models favored by Neimoidian barons have automatic pilots, doing away with a cockpit in exchange for increased cabin space. The Lapiz Cutter, belonging to Viceroy Nute Gunray, had no armaments and powerful deflector shields.

General Grievous, having some distrust of automated shuttle systems, insisted a crewed cockpit be kept in the shuttle. Battle droids operated his vessel for occasional transit when his personal starfighter was not available.

When the Republic's ambassadors emerged from lightspeed and approached the blockaded world of Naboo, they found a flotilla of imposing warships surrounding the peaceful blue and green world. At over three kilometers in diameter, the enormous vessels resemble flattened disks with a central sphere containing the ship's bridge and reactor assemblies. The disk is broken at the front of the craft, revealing two mammoth docking bays lined with forward docking claws. The reclusive Neimoidian commanders typically seal themselves in the ship's spacious bridge while their legions of droids handle the operation of the mighty craft.

The most important vessel in the Trade Federation's blockade was the Droid Control Ship. When the rest of the blockade had dispersed after Naboo was successfully occupied, the Neimoidians left the Droid Control Ship in orbit.

Not originally designed as warships, the Trade Federation battleship started life as cargo freighters for their vast commercial fleet. When the Neimoidians began secretly building their armed forces, one of their first acts was to convert their freighters into combat warships.

The conversion wasn't entirely effective -- while the vessels themselves are powerful, they do have a number of weaknesses. The addition of retractable turbolasers along the equator of the ship's hull left large blind spots that speedy vessels could exploit, as the Naboo Royal Starship did during its escape.

These battleships have cavernous hangar bays -- a holdover from their freighter configurations -- that can carry an entire invasion army. One battleship can carry 550 MTTs, 6,250 AATs, 1,500 troop carriers, 50 C-9979 landing craft and 1,500 droid starfighters.

The most important battleship in the Trade Federation blockade was the Droid Control Ship. Appearing very similar to the standard battleship -- a flattened ring shape with engines at the aft, docking claws at the fore, and a large detachable sphere in the center -- the Droid Control Ship was easily distinguished by the clustered array of transmitters and receiver antennae on its dorsal surface.

This array transmitted signals to the battle droid army on the surface of Naboo. The battle droid infantry, droidekas, and droid starfighters all drew their commands and actions from the control ship high in orbit. The heavily armed craft was a prime target for the Naboo starfighter squadron that defended the planet.

The Force was with rookie pilot Anakin Skywalker as he landed his N-1 starfighter in the control ship's hangar bay and fired twin proton torpedoes into the ship's unprotected reactor. The resulting explosion crippled the droid army, and ensured victory for the besieged Naboo and Gungan forces.

During the Battle of Naboo, Captain Daultay Dofine helmed the Droid Control Ship. He perished aboard the vessel when the main reactors exploded.

Built around the frame of a Hoersch-Kessel freighter, the Droid Control Ship was further modified beyond the other battleships of the Trade Federation. The tall transmission towers tapped directly into the ship's main reactor to boost broadcast power. To compensate, the Droid Control Ship had a number of additional reactors chained together -- a design feature exploited by Anakin Skywalker's fortuitous proton torpedo volley.

Along the perimeter of the ship were 16 droid signal receivers, which picked up the many thousands of signals sent for processing by the control ship's main computer. These tremendous computer banks housed the Central Control Computer, which kept the droid army functioning.

The Droid Control Ship had a diameter of 3.17 kilometers. A set of Rendili StarDrive proton 2 and proton 12 sublight drives provided the ship propulsion in space.

Facilitating the illegal Trade Federation invasion of Naboo were fleets of terrifying landing ships that filled the skies of the peaceful world. With its huge wingspan and imposing boot-shaped loading ramp, the Trade Federation landing ship is a daunting sight. Once the immense vessels set down on the outlying forests and swamps of Naboo, they disgorged hundreds of AATs, MTTs, troop transports and battle droids into the wilderness.

Haor Chall Engineering designed the bizarre-looking craft with characteristic Trade Federation efficiency. The specially built C-9979 transport ship can hold heavy armor and legions of troops throughout the habitable volume contained within its hull.

The C-9979's immense wings are removable for ease of storage and docking. When deployed, powerful tensor field generators bind the wings to the craft, and strengthen the vessel's overall structural integrity. Large repulsorlifts keep the C-9979 from sagging under its own weight.

When in an atmosphere, the C-9979 can attain a speed of about 590 kilometers per hour. It carries a total of 28 troop carriers, 114 AATs, and 11 MTTs and requires a crew of 88 droids. Two pairs of wing-tip lasers and four turret-mounted cannons comprise its armaments.

STAP
Single Trooper Ariel Platform

STAPs are lightweight reconnaissance and patrol vehicles used by the battle droids of the Trade Federation army. Incorporating repulsorlift technology, the STAP (single trooper aerial platform) is a slim, agile craft sporting a pair of blaster cannons. STAPs are often deployed as support vehicles in conjunction with larger craft.

STAP (Single Trooper Aerial Platform)

The design of the STAP draws inspiration from similar civilian vehicles called airhooks. Trade Federation engineers refitted the design with greater performance and reliability. High-voltage energy cells fuel the tiny craft's drive turbines, which afford the STAP impressive maneuverability.

The STAP's greatest weakness is its fragility -- its pilot rides exposed to enemy fire. Though the craft is very agile, a lucky shot can quickly destroy a STAP or its pilot. As such, the STAP is strictly relegated to patrol and "mopping up" missions, while the brunt of combat is borne by heavier vehicles.

Trade Federation AAT (Armored Assault Tank)

The marriage of repulsorlift and heavy armor has resulted in formidable floating tanks known as AATs. These assault tanks form the frontline of Trade Federation armored infantry divisions. A crew of battle droids drives the battle tank and operates the array of laser and projectile weaponry carried by the vehicle.

Baktoid Armor Workshop's Armored Assault Tank is a fearsome design studded with heavy artillery. Its turret-mounted primary laser cannon has long-range destructive capability, and is bracketed by a pair of pylon-mounted secondary laser cannons. A pair of forward-facing short range blaster cannons round out the AAT's energy-weapon complement.

Contained in the forward edge of the tank's armored repulsorlift shroud are six energized shell projectile launchers capable of delivering specialized payloads. The tank contains three separate magazines from which to draw warheads: high-energy shells encased in a cocoon of plasma for incredible speed and penetration power, specialized armor-piercing warheads, and high explosive "bunker busting" shells.

The AAT requires a crew of four battle droids to operate: a commander, a pilot, and two gunners. The vehicle has a maximum speed of 55 kilometers per hour.

Trade Federation MTT (Multi Troop Transport)

A terrifying display of Trade Federation efficiency, the mammoth MTT (Multi-Troop Transport) is an armored giant capable of disgorging over a hundred battle droid soldiers into the thick of combat. The vehicle's bulbous armored front end opens to reveal an articulated deployment rack, upon which rest dozens of compressed battle droids. The rack extends forward and deposits the droids into neatly organized rows. Upon activation from an orbiting Droid Control Ship, the droids unfold into their humanoid configuration.

Manufactured by Baktoid Armor Workshop, the Multi-Troop Transport's bold lines and prodigious size recall heavy jungle-dwelling creatures known for charging their enemy. The MTT follows a similar design strategy, as its heavily armored fore section can withstand great impacts, allowing it to ram an enemy building, and then unload its carried troops behind enemy lines. The hydraulically powered deployment rack is detachable, and can carry 112 battle droids in stowed configuration.

The vehicle's engines work hard to create the repulsorlift field required to move so heavy a craft. The repulsorlift's cooling and exhaust system vents straight down beneath the craft, creating a warm cushion of air beneath the MTT.

In addition to its thick armor, the MTT is protected by four forwarded-mounted anti-personnel blasters. It has a maximum ground speed of 35 kilometers per hour, and a flight ceiling of four meters.

Geonosian starfighter

A lean, needle-nosed fighter-craft with a distinct alien heritage, the starfighters of the Geonosians are small, compact vessels of great speed and superior agility. A single Geonosian pilot sits within the cramped cockpit, his head poking up to peer out of a bubble canopy allowing a 360-degree field of vision. Cradled within the forward needles of the ship is a turret-mounted laser cannon. When Count Dooku fled the first engagement of the Clone Wars, a pair of Geonosian starfighters provided escort and covering fire.

The Geonosians are a territorial lot, and guard their spires and factories with genetically-encoded zeal. They have applied their craftsmanship into the construction of such security assets as the Nantex-class starfighter. The twin-pronged needle-nosed fighter is an effective deterrent to intruders of Geonosian airspace, and unlike their battle droid designs, the Geonosians have not marketed the craft to outside consumers.

This is mostly due to the ship's control systems being specificially tailored for a Geonosian pilot. The complex multi-axis control yokes require a Geonosian's dexterity, and vital performance feedback is provided to the pilot via a scent-stimulator mask that exploits the accute Geonosian olfactory senses.

The fighter's primary weapon is a turret-orb mounted laser cannon. The weapon orb and engine cluster are modular, and can be swapped out for mission specific requirements. In addition to its primary weapon orb, the starfighter is lined with dozens of independently-aiming narrow-beam tractor/repulsor projectors. These devices provide the ship with increased agility in an atmosphere, but can be used offensively to reduce the maneuverability of target craft.

The outer hull of the starfighter is constructed of woven, reinforced laminasteel. The flexible building material allows the starfighter to rebound from impacts that would fracture more rigid vessels.

Confederacy of Independent Systems

When the Separatists attacked Coruscant in the twilight of the Clone Wars, they employed as many different and cutting edge combat starship designs as they could to better the chances of victory in their most bold and daring strike. Swarming from the hangar bays of Confederacy battleships were tri-fighters, automated starfighters equipped with groupings of four blaster cannons. The bracing arms surrounded a rotating gyroscopic ball that housed the droid's brain.

The fully automated tri-fighter is bigger and less maneuverable than the slim vulture fighters, but nonetheless posed a threat, particularly to the slower ARC-170 fighters.

The tri-fighter derives its name from the triple support arms that steady its primary cannons, and it derives these arms from the skull shape of a predator native to the world of its designers. The Colicoid Creation Nest, the same amoral cannibalistic insectoid designers responsible for the deadly droidekas, designed the tri-fighter. Also contributing to its name is the array of triple independent thrusters that afford it its agility.

The tri-fighter brain is more sophisticated than that of the vulture droid starfighter. Its robust power planet and advanced communication transceiver give a tri-fighter impressive operating range for a non-hyperdrive equipped automated starfighter.

Banking Clan communications frigate

The InterGalactic Banking Clan employed specialized warships for the protection of the vast store of riches it was tasked to transport among its heavily fortified vaults. These huge capital ships carry enough firepower to deter even the most daring of pirates. During the Clone Wars, when the Banking Clan devoted its forces to the Confederacy of Independent Systems, these frigates were adorned with the hexagonal emblem of the unified Separatists, and were involved in major campaigns against the Republic.

Aiding the Banking Clan's rise to financial dominance was a deeply rooted culture of extreme paranoia among its highest board members. Investors felt secure that the Clan took extraordinary measures to protect its assets, including the construction of some of the most advanced war droids and military equipment. So concerned with theft and government interference was the Banking Clan that it built its own communications network separate from the HoloNet.

A relay network of subspace and hyperwave transceivers established secure channels for financial transactions. If an enterprising thief decided to target the physical transceiver itself rather than slice the network, he or she would find an unsettling surprise. The transceivers were carried aboard large Munificent-class star frigates, immense capital ships armed with powerful weaponry.

These frigates were used to spread the Banking Clan's private network and to move solid assets between vaults and clients. When the Clone Wars erupted, Chairman San Hill brought the Banking Clan into the Confederacy fold, and committed a number of star frigates to what he believed was a profitable venture. The communications network maintained by this fleet was used primarily for military and propaganda transmission, not for finances.

A Banking Clan frigate is heavily armed, with an enormous twin prow turbolaser cannon that is slow to maneuver, but deadly to larger warships. The ship also has two long-range ion cannons, 26 turbolaser cannons, 20 light turbolaser turrets and 38 point-defense laser cannons. It can carry a complement of up to 150,000 deactivated battle droids in compressed configuration.
