Gary Kurtz's alternate ending

Post by freefly » Wed Nov 30, 2005 5:13 pm

Excerpt from IGN's interview with Gary Kurtz & Empire Building by Garry Jenkins

Episode 6: The resolution of ROTJ was to be quite bittersweet, with Han being killed, the princess having to take over as queen of what remained of her people, leaving everybody else, & Luke was, in effect, left on his own. The idea of another attack on another Death Star wasn't there at all... And there were no Ewoks... Darth Vader was to be the main villain & ultimately dies at the hands of Luke.

Episodes 7-9: There were enough material for 3 earlier films and 3 later films, to make a total of 9, and there were outlined materials for a later 3 that culminated with this big clash with the Emperor in Episode 9(his first appearance).
Quite a different take on the star wars saga. I wonder how would star wars had turned out, if Gary Kurtz had his way. What do you think? Please share your thoughts...
(Gary Kurtz was the producer of Star Wars & The Empire Strikes Back, before he & George Lucas parted ways).

Maybe this is why GL now says that he never intended it to be 9 parts and only 6....

Curious, why call episode #4 to start first, and not #3 or #5?

Actually - when it was first screened in the Summer of 77 - did it have that Episode IV thinghie? Or was that only added in 78 during the re-release?

i believe it was added only in '78, after star wars became a major hit. initially george was toying with the idea of making low budget spin-offs. splinter of the mind's eye (available both as novel & comics) was to be one of many in the line-up, though the success of star wars changed everything. it was later renamed as star wars ep4: a new hope simply because the events therein takes place right in the middle of the saga that george has drafted out earlier.

That may sounds nice, but a little dark and twisted. But it sounds like those games, final stage, emperor. LOL

I agree that 3 more movies would be great ESPECIALLY since the principle actors are all still alive and well..... (OK, alive anyways). Mark Hamil, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Kenny Baker, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Ian Mcdiarmid are all still around and would be able to reprise their roles.

Introduce the kids of Solo and Leia who will then be the ones to take over the mantle of the Jedi and end it with a true balance of the force.

Just DO NOT LET George Lucas behind the camera.

George Lucas should write the story - with screenplay written by him in collaboration with others.
GL should produce (pls remove Rick McCullum), executive produce and take all production roles.
GL should be part of editing process.
GL MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO DIRECT! A GOOD director should be found and put in place (no Steven Spielberg please!) GL MAY co-direct but maybe the second unit or from SFX POV.
Music to be by John Williams ONLY if he agrees to devote his time to the project.
SFX - Industrial Light & Magic
Sound - Ben Bertt (if that's the right spelling)
and we definitely need a continuity / consistency checker or SW historian on set to make sure no more inconsistencies (any SW fan can do this job)

Thoughts?

Major SW Characters, where are they now?

Post by Plo Strax-Avix » Sat Dec 31, 2005 6:41 pm

Mark Hamill: Would DIE to be part of a SW movie again. He nows guest starts as himself on some sitcoms, signs authographs at conventions and do odds and ends to make ends meet. The only constant work he's had seem to be the voice of the Joker on most of the animated Batman series. He's also lend his voice to numerous other animated characters through the years. He is perhaps the LEAST successful actor of all the SW movies, a pity considering he was THE hero figure of all 3 OT movies. For more info goto http://www.markhamill.com/

Carrie Fisher: Carrie would alos love to have another go in a SW movie, although I'm not sure if she can pull off the role of Princess Leia successfuly and he's really old and haggard looking now. Perhaps if episode 7 is set another 20-30 years after ROTJ and he plays grandma Leia. She's had better luck then Mark Hamill and worked on a few big budget movies and over 30 TV shows since ROTJ, apart from being a guest star on numerous highly rated TV shows. For more info goto http://www.carriefisher.com/

Harrison Ford: EVERYONE knows Harrison Ford is the only person who truly made it big after Star Wars. Here he is back in the big scrrrn in 2006 in his latest thriller, FIREWALL. However Harrison Ford has said during interviews that he would NEVER star in another Star Wars movie again, citing personal differences with GL. But there's nothing stopping his 'children' from appearing in future SW movies. For more info goto www.harrisonfordweb.com

Kenny Baker: One of two actors to have starred in all six SW movies, Kenny will most likely return to the set of episode 7 and beyond if they ever get made. R2 will undoubtedly not be quite the same without Kenny inside for the most part of the movie. He is currently a clown and shadow Ringmaster in Billy Smart's Circus. For more info goto www.kennybaker.co.uk

Anthony Daniels: The only other actor who was in all siz SW movies, playing the annoying but loayl protocol droid C3PO. He spent the past 20+ years involved in pretty much every SW related documentary and Droid related Sci Fi programme and documentary ever made, both as himself and as C3PO. Although the Star Wars saga has formed a major part of Daniels' career, he has interspersed those movies with a variety of television and stage appearances. These range from situation comedies such as Square Deal and Three Up Two Down to more serious dramas such as Prime Suspect and Priestly's Dangerous Corner.
For more info goto http://www.anthonydaniels.com/index.html

Peter Mayhew: The 7' 3" giant inside the wookiw suit, Peter Mayhew appeared in 4 of the 6 SW movies, and is the only one who fans will approve of to play Chewbacca if more SW movies were to made and if Chewbacca has a role in them. Peter Mayhew spent the past 20+ years involved in pretty much every SW related documentary and spin-off programme ever made, both as himself and as Chewbacca. He's a familiar figure at conventions and SW related events and do not have a problem reprising his role if and when the need arises. For more info goto www.petermayhew.com

Ian Mcdiarmid: His involvement with Star Wars only started during Episode 6: ROTJ, but his presence and his character was undoubtedly a major part of the entire Star Wars universe. He stayed for the next 3 episodes and showed all the fans exactly how hideous Sidious can be in his quest for power. Ian would probably be cast as Sidious's clone or as a spirit in furute SW movies.

Apart fron various TV & stage performances, his other notable appearances was in Dragonslayer (1981), Sleepy Hollow (1999) and All the King's Men, a feature length TV drama. For more info goto www.ianmcdiarmid.com/.

Balance is achieved when both sides are balanced. Technically, it may be argued that at the end of both Episode 3 and 6 that the Force is still not yet in balance (but this was never suggested in 4 to 6 anyway) so a nice touch would be to bring balance to the force following up on the theme in the prequels.

And no SS please because his sense of directing and sentiments of recent years don't really fit in with the SW universe.

But of course, these are my personal opinion - am sure there are many who would disagree

yeah i agree with you on steven. but i'm quite certain balance is achieved at the end of ROTJ. actually i came across a book about the philosophy in starwars stating that balance is achieved when good=bad in relation to ying & yang. however this contradicts what george has said on numerous occasion. in starwars balance is achieved when the sith is completely wiped out. so in ROTJ when vader killed palpatine & himself in the process, he did brought about balance to the force.
