Lens for most helmets

Post by Paul K » Sun Nov 19, 2006 10:18 pm

Hi Guys, If you are doing up your own helmet and in need of a lens, here's a suggestion. Head on down to Kelantan Lane where there are a bunch of motorcycle accessories shops. I picked up a dark grey visor that is thin enough that you can still trim with a good pair of shears. The visor is dark enough that makes it hard for people to see in but you can still view out. Ask for the cheapest helmet shield. It cost me $5.00. There is another variation that is in an amber colour.

Alternatively, get your hands on clear acrylic sheets of 1 mm thickness from a good craft shop (or simply improvise from clear hard packaging of products) and a smalll piece of tinted solar film from specialised shops... Try to ask the shops if they have waste film and you might get them FOC...

To apply the film, spray a little soapy water on the acrylic that is already cut to size... Apply the film, rubbing out air bubbles along the way.... Allow the improvised lens to dry and trim away the excess film... When affixing the lens in a curved manner, the film side should be on the outward side to prevent peeling...

The use of solar film gives a wider selection of tint levels and colours, such as the chrome lens for my TIE Fighter Pilot helmet...

PS. Chrome or coloured lenses are considered non-canon.
