Best Sand/Stormtrooper gears

Post by Sho » Tue Aug 29, 2006 5:16 pm

Hi all, I've always like the stormtroopers ever since the first ROTJ movie when I was a kid. Now that i'm much older and financially able, I would like to get myself a Storm/Sandtrooper costume. Can I join you guys?

However, I have some questions and I know perhaps they have been asked many times but I can't seem to be able to find the answers after going through the forum. Would appreciate if some seniors could help answer them.

1. Since I've decided on the sand/Storm trooper costume, where and which supplier is the best/reliable? Which maker?(Don Post, FX etc..) I'm confused.

2. I know that the entire set cost more than a grand and would like to find out what are the important gears to buy and which to DIY.

3. I would like to start by getting the bucket and the armour set. can some kind soul lead me?

4. I'm 182cm. Is the costume too small for me? bucket too small?(My head is rather big)

5. What are the cost involved for each item ie, armour, bucket, ...

6. Thank you all so much in advance. I hope to join you guys for some events in future. :D

HELLO SHO! welcome =) guess you are welcome to join us anytime=) heh..
not sure about helmet though but Don Post do not manufacture armor, helmets only. Studiocreations is selling a stormie set,and its affordable too.their stormie set is kinda cheap and its about 800-900 plus shipping to sing. heres the link -http://www.studiocreations.com/howto/st ... index.html, click the for sale link. and your height is okay for stormie,no worries

i think cheap sponge cut to size will do, no need some fancy expensive gizmo that does the same thing. haaa

Sho - i think you should spend more time looking around and sourcing for a suitable and reasonably priced set of armour suiting your budget. Getting one too hastily, beware of bad conditioned armour. Im sure desmond and the seniors here would be willing to help out in sourcing a set.

For me, im just doing my clone helmet from scratch, it will take a while when i really do get my full armour. Need to compare prices, and go at a pace suitable. =)

Welcome SHO, first of all what is your budget...???
And how long or how fast you want to own the costume?
Reason for asking that the TE manufacturer which produce the actual movies prop will be producing the TE2 which is the re-run from the first...

I own a GF2 which can say the same grade as the TE...no difference but is only pricing and the casting that all...Is should be in either 3rd quarter or the last quarter of this year...

If you have a tight budget then I will suggest getting the FX and do the necessary modification...

Hope I can share with you in future regards to the sand....hehehe :D

Any grade of armour all need modifications. Not just the FX. The important thing I learnt from all my senior Storm/sand here and overseas.
The armour is as good as the person wearing it.
FX will do just fine. It fits the higher and bigger person better too.

it is in the attitude... not the armour...

Wow! A big Thanks to all for the valuable pointers, you've all been very helpful. Guess I'll have to check the links and research more.

i've also decided to limit my armour budget to abt $800. I hope that is enough for the main armour/bucket?. Btw, I'm also into plastic modelling so modification will be interesting esp weathering.

Erase: I hope to own the costume for a long time while slowly upgrading it. I don't like to rush into getting them in case i regret so no problem waiting. I may spend more if it's worth the money or i'll prefer to mod instead. Save moolah  Hope to share with too

9: Yes, hate rushing things and regreting later.

:( . Geez.. you building the helmet from scratch? Would love to take a look after you've complete them. Don't have the skill otherwise i'll built one too. :D

Thanks to all the others for the links.

p.s. I just bought the Obi wan FX saber. Had a great time playing with it,just hope technology will come up with one without the tube.

Hi Sho,

As the saying goes "what you pay, is what you get". There are basically 3 main types of armour material in the market.... Styrene, ABS & Fibreglass... I would describe Styrene as cheap but good for display only because of its brittleness... ABS would be good for trooping because of its light weight... Fibreglass would be the most durable but heavier & more costly...

If you ask me, I'd advise you to stick to ABS and check out a few sources first... A low price might mean poor detailing... I've noted that the Biker Scout set from Studio Creations is pretty disappointing in that aspect, but if you are good with craftwork, you can improve it on your own...

Aim for a trimmed set of armour if you don't own the tools (and skills) to trim it...

I'm not sure if you can actually get both the armour and the helmet for USD800... You can get a pretty good helmet kit from Ebay at USD158...

If you are able to wait abit, meet us in our costumes on 23 Sep at Ngee Ann Civic Plaza where we'll be participating in a charity fair and you'll be able to gauge the helmet sizes...

Can you tell me which makers are recommended for ABS and Fiberglass? Guess AFX only does ABS helmets?

I'm afraid of getting a "distorted" helmet, one which i've seen that looks like a stormtrooper on a crash diet which I wanna avoid. Minor mods to enhance the look such as replacing the painted vents with fine detailing would be great but a distorted piece would be difficult to correct.

I'm not sure if you can actually get both the armour and the helmet for USD800... You can get a pretty good helmet kit from Ebay at USD158...

Can you recommend me some reliable sellers on ebay? ( Had known some cases of cheats on ebay)

Is this really a quality set? From underneath looks very empty, are they all the same? should I need add a full face kinda paddings to fill the gaps?

Ooooh.. That would be great! I'm actually looking out for the next one.
Thanks again

Actually found this on sale. But is this for real? I mean the character, does it really appear in the movies? That is rather unusual for a black trooper. but cool no doubt.

If you meant the Blackhole Stormtrooper, this fall under the category of Expanded Universe...
