I seem to remember reading about this somewhere, but I'm not sure if I'm right or not, so take what I say with a pinch of salt...

The Jedi and the Sith actually had a common origin. The Jedi were the "guardians of the galaxy" and all, but eventually there were conflicts of ideals and philosophy and so on. I guess some of the Jedi began to wonder why they had to "use the force for knowledge and defense, never for attack". I mean, the best defense is a good offense, right? So why not get rid of those pesky troublemakers once and for all, since we have the power? Of course the mainstream Jedi disagreed. The deviants left, and ended up on some remote planet; the Sith were the indigenous people (this is the part I remember reading; can't remember where exactly, I think it was the comics). Eventually, after a period of time involving intermarriages and the like, the deviant Jedi and the Sith became one and the same.

I'm not very clear on Jedi and Sith philosophy, but I guess the crux of the issue is that they differ on how to use the force. What the force is, and what it's for. The Sith aren't trying to be evil.

Personally, though, I lean towards being a Jedi, "babelicious hotties dressed in Slave Outfits" notwithstanding (sorry Commander =P)

Dude, the girls dig Jedis! I mean, just look at the movies. Luke gets Leia. Anakin gets Padme -- until he becomes Vader, at which point he gets zip. Maul? Also zip. Dooku? Zilch. Palpatine? Nada. See the pattern? =P

Although I suppose real Jedi are supposed to be above emotional attachments -- before the NJO, that is.
