The Beginning Of The End?
Could this this be the beginning of the end for mankind as chronicled in TERMINATOR: RISE OF THE MACHINES?

If technology continue to advance at the current rate(and many believe the rate of advancement will accellerate exponantially due to the 'compounded' effect), the age of sentient AI will be upon us before the end of this century, or even sooner.Commander Faie wrote:Terminator, nah...so far far away...

Lets use electric vehicles as an example. I just read in today's newspaper that Keio University in Japan has not only successfully built a fully functional electric car, but have broken the speed record for the non-competition category electric vehicle, with a top speed of 370Km/hr. This vehicle, or a new model meant for the road, is due to be marketed in limited quantities in 4 to 5 years' time.
Read about it HERE
The point I want to make is, Keio Universiti only started developing the electric vehicle 25 years ago in 1980. Using that as a guide, we may see sentient AI technology in 30 to 50 years' time. I may be gone by then, but most of you who are now in your teens/20s or even early 30s may still be around to witness it. Your grandchildren will most probably be delivered by androids instead of human midwifes, and have androids nannys...
Our technology is moving at break-neck speed. Things that are considered Science Fiction todya is not that far away from being a reality...

The days of Johnny Mnemonic is not far too.
Here we have hearing-impaired kids implanted with device in their heads for a plug-in to a receiver so they can hear sound.
In the Age of Convergence, impossible becomes probable and then into reality. Matter of wait & see.

When I watched Johnny Mnemonic many years ago, I was very impressed with the 250GB disc ... it was the time where our harddisk is still in MB ...masterjamous wrote:The days of Johnny Mnemonic is not far too...

Now harddisk exceeding 120GB is very common, and the top range reached 300GB ... the high-density DVD and BlueRay is now competing with the 120GB disc market ... the memory cards and thumb drives capacitiy are now in GB and no just MB ... the day has come!

ps: btw I seem to have lost some posts here leh ... I remember posting a reply here saying that the driverless car should name as KITT as in Knight Rider, but now the post disappears ...

Certainly have not seen your post about KITT before. Perhaps there was a glitch in the matrix; possibly the handiwork of Agent Smith.

So what's the term after GB? TrigaBytes? or GoogleBytes?

well, based on www.wikipedia.org ...
1 Kilobyte (KB) = 1,000 Bytes
1 Megabyte (MB) = 1,000 KB
1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1,000 MB
1 Terabyte (TB) = 1,000 GB
1 Petabyte (PB) = 1,000 TB
1 Exabyte (EB) = 1,000 PB
1 Zettabyte (ZB) = 1,000 EB
1 Yottabyte (YB) = 1,000 ZB
You may already have Terabytes of data at home ... each of your DVD disc is approx 9GB, so just count how many DVDs you currently have ...
1 Yottabyte seems like a lot, but if u want to record every atom in a human body with a 100-byte file, u will need 590,000 yottabytes of storage space!
... (so wait long long to beam me up
)
Now both posts are gone ...

i am certain that I posted KITT (Knight Rider) ... then someone even replied that the driverless car already hav a name - Stanley.masterjamous wrote:Certainly have not seen your post about KITT before. Perhaps there was a glitch in the matrix; possibly the handiwork of Agent Smith.![]()

Herr Dr
Looks like you've got a case of Agent Smith virus. May I recommend the best prescription - the Neo antidote.
On the issue of bits and bytes, does it mean a Xenabyte would describe the memory capacity of a human brain?

Xenobyte? ... Xena, the Warrior Princess ...masterjamous wrote: On the issue of bits and bytes, does it mean a Xenabyte would describe the memory capacity of a human brain?

I need to point it out that 1 Kilo = 1000, however in computer, 1 Kilo equates to 1024, or 2 to the power of 10.
So actually
1 Kilobyte (KB) = 1,024 Bytes
1 Megabyte (MB) = 1,024 KB
1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1,024 MB
1 Terabyte (TB) = 1,024 GB
1 Petabyte (PB) = 1,024 TB
1 Exabyte (EB) = 1,024 PB
etc.
So actually
1 Kilobyte (KB) = 1,024 Bytes
1 Megabyte (MB) = 1,024 KB
1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1,024 MB
1 Terabyte (TB) = 1,024 GB
1 Petabyte (PB) = 1,024 TB
1 Exabyte (EB) = 1,024 PB
etc.
Find, fix, finish
