THE Crocodile Man, Steve Irwin, is dead. He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said.

It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

He was 44.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the incident happened.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

It is understood Mr Irwin was killed around midday, Eastern Australian time.

Really pity, he could evade the Croc but died in the hands of Fish, Stingray that is. Wonder who will replace him as Croc Hunter.

I thought that it was reported that he died because of a string ray barb to his chest?

Went through his chest is quite frightening.

One he may have died because of poisoning, the other he may have died because of the piercing effect.

Rest in peace Steve. You have brought much joy and entertainment to many fans and kids out there watching your documentary.
Rest in Peace, for you will be missed. :(

I'm worried for his kids... imagine losing your father... :(

Fortunately I don't receive so much silly and retard replies such as "ok 1 who gives a fu*ck this is what he gets for fu&cking with wild life.2 no one cares. 3 everyone will know in the next 24 hours." posted by some ignorant folk at other forum.

Someone passed away... Can we be more sensitive about it and stop all the drama postings?

When I heard about it over the news last night, I was pretty shocked... my sis was also rendered speechless in disbelief... one of my most favourite cable TV channels is Animal Planet, and I regularly watch Steve Irwin and his programs filmed at Australia Zoo and in other places around the world... when I first came to know of Steve, I thought that he did too much to provoke the animals he handled, and as a result, often got hurt in the process of interacting with them... but with time, I realised just how passionate he was about animals, and what a dedicated conservationist he really is... I began to enjoy watching his TV shows more and more, and there was many a night when I couldn't sleep and his programs kept me company until I fell asleep on the sofa... whenever Steve got hurt handling the animals, I felt pain for him and could barely continue watching, even though on the screen, Steve took every blow like a real man... right now, I feel sad for his wife and 2 young children who will now be without a father... but he died doing what he loved most, and for that I salute him... may God bless him as he leaves this world to join the next... Steve Irwin will be sadly missed
