Flood control on search?

Each time I visit this forums, I always like to click on "View Post Since Last Visit" button to read all new posts. After finish reading a post, i will click "Back" button again for other unread posts. This work fine since I first signup till now.
Lately whenever I click "Back" button to return to "View Post Since Last Visit", I see an error message:
You cannot make another search so soon after your last; please try again in a short while.
I understand that this feature is called "flood control" to prevent spammers from spamming countless new posts onto the forums. But I'm curious, why do we need a "flood control" on
searching?

Searching is something which is quite intensive, so it's there to ensure performance is not affected. However, I've made some changes to make it less painful.

I have a different problem. When I access this forum, I usually browse around, not necessarily checking all new posts. I do that only when I have time. Otherwise, I will just only check the topics that interest me, while leaving the rest alone. I do not even click on the main header. Then when I checked back the next time, I find that they are no longer listed as new topics even though I did not access it. Someone the cookies are not correctly set.

I have the exact same problem when I refresh the posts under 'View posts since last visit'. Before I refresh there'd be at least 5 to 10 posts I haven't clicked on yet, but after refreshing I only see 1 or 2 posts with the orange icon.

Think I found the answer, but that'll mean I'll need to reset all cookies, and everyone's going to loose it. It's got to do with security of the cookies. I'll need to find a good time to do that.
